Small Business Investment: An Economic Development Tool of Our Time

In the fall of 2011, The Merchants Fund with an M.S. candidate in Public Policy at Drexel University, Haley Vandermeer, created ‘Small Business Investment: An Economic Development Tool of Our Time.’  It’s a comprehensive look at our beginnings, ten of our grantees prior to 2011, and the results forged by TMF grants to these small businesses in Philadelphia.

The Merchants Fund: Stories of Success

In December 2013, TMF mated with the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Community Consultant Group, managed by our Wharton Board Fellow, Brian Swanson, to curate ‘The Merchants Fund: Stories of Success.’  It provides a brief history of TMF, a window into how we made grants at the time, and follows up with nine, snapshot case studies of our grantees.

Grid Magazine: Beyond Big Business

Grid Magazine is a free, monthly online and print publication focused on sustainability issues and initiatives in the Greater Philadelphia Area.  This 58th issue, Beyond Big Business was written on January 9th 2014 by Grid Magazine.  It highlights how TMF got started and where we are today.  Also, It offers local resources to the business community that are highly valuable.  Finally, it focuses on eight of our funded merchants in Philadelphia: Little Baby’s Ice Cream, Urban Jungle, Night Kitchen Bakery, Mariposa Food Co-op, Geechee Girl Rice Cafe, Firehouse Bicycles and Wolf Cycle, Eviama Life Spa, and Queen Village Art Center.
