Emergency Grant, Spring 2008
The El Bar is a multi-generational family business established in 1970. It is located underneath ‘the El’ train line on North Front Street. It is pinned right between the Olde Kensington and Fishtown neighborhoods of Philadelphia. On Wednesday and Saturday nights they offer live music with inexpensive food and drinks. They offer room for large group seating or take-out.
The establishment was flooded when the adjacent furniture warehouse burned down. The need for immediate damage assessment, refurbishment, and cleaning was essential. The El Bar has a rising reputation as a music venue, and the bar is positioned to feed into the master plan to make lower Girard Avenue a music destination.
